A signature is your name written in your own handwriting. Many people sign in cursive. You can sign a card, a letter, a drawing you made, or a library card.

A clear signature: a capital for each name, letters joined, a space between.

Key idea

Write your name the same way each time, and keep it readable.

Why it works

A signature shows that you wrote or agreed to something. Signing the same way every time makes it yours, and a readable one lets people know who signed.

Worked example: Practice a signature

How can Omar practice his signature?
  1. Write his first name in cursive, with a cursive capital O.
  2. Leave a space and write his last name the same way.
  3. Write it five times, the same each time.

Answer: Neat cursive, the same way every time.

Trace a short first name.

Common mistake

Thinking a signature must be fancy or impossible to read. A clear, steady signature is a good one.
For the grown-up. Some children like to practice their signature on cards and notes they send. Grown-ups sign forms, checks and letters the same way.
