Now you can write a whole sentence in cursive. Put together what you know: a cursive capital, joined words (capitals and spaces), and an end mark.

A sentence in cursive.
  • Start with a cursive capital.
  • Join the letters of each word; lift between words.
  • Dot the i’s and cross the t’s when each word is done.
  • End with a period, a question mark or an exclamation mark.

Key idea

Capital, joined words with spaces, dots and crosses, end mark. Steady and readable comes before fast.

Why it works

A sentence is for a reader. If the letters lose their shapes when you hurry, the reader has to guess.

Worked example: Check a sentence

Leo wrote: we can swim, in cursive. What two things are missing?
  1. A sentence starts with a capital: We.
  2. A sentence ends with a mark: a period.
  3. Fixed: We can swim.

Answer: The capital W and the period.

Trace I can: two words, a lift between them.

Common mistake

Speeding up until the letters lose their shapes. Slow down: neat first, quick later.
For the grown-up. Palmer’s course ends with sentences and names; see line-writing. One sentence a day, copied carefully, is plenty.
