Conclusions

A conclusion returns to the thesis in new words and shows why it matters, without starting a new argument.

A concluding sentence closes one paragraph. A conclusion closes a whole essay, after the body paragraphs have made the case.

Key idea

A conclusion returns to the thesis in new words, pulls the main points together, and shows why it matters: a larger meaning, a result or a next step. It doesn’t start a new argument.

Why it works

The end of an essay is what the reader remembers best. A conclusion that only repeats the introduction wastes that moment. One that shows why the point matters gives the reader something to take with them.
  • So what? Why should the reader care?
  • What next? A step the reader, the school or the town could take.
  • The bigger picture: how the point connects to something larger.
  • Echo the hook: return to the opening scene or question, now answered.

Worked example: Restate, don’t repeat

Thesis: “Our district should move the high school start time to 8:30 a.m. so students can get the sleep they need.” Write the first sentence of a conclusion.
  1. Keep the idea; change the words.
  2. Fold in what the essay showed: health and learning.

Answer: “An 8:30 start would give students the rest that their health and their schoolwork depend on.”

Worked example: Echo the hook

The essay opened with Maya’s 6:15 a.m. alarm. How could the conclusion end?
  1. Return to the scene, changed by the essay’s argument.

Answer: “With an 8:30 start, Maya’s alarm could ring once, and she could answer it.”

Which sentences belong in a conclusion?
Avoid announcing the ending (“In conclusion, this essay showed…”). The reader can see the essay is ending. Spend those words on why the point matters instead. A short essay may need only three or four sentences of conclusion.

Common mistake

Repeating the introduction word for word, or starting a brand-new point. Check: compare your first and last paragraphs side by side. They should share an idea, not sentences. And every idea in the conclusion should already be in the essay.
