prosaic

proh-ZAY-ikadj

Meaning dull and unimaginative; lacking poetry

Memory hook PROSE-aic: plain PROSE, no poetry. Zoe looks up and sees a dragon, a castle and a ship in the clouds. Sami looks up and says, “Those are clouds.” His plain, unpoetic answer is prosaic.

Asked what the clouds looked like, the prosaic boy said only, “Clouds.”

In context Visitors expected the castle to hide secret passages and treasure, but its history was prosaic: for three hundred years it had mostly stored grain.

Similar dull, unimaginative, ordinary, matter-of-fact

Opposite imaginative, poetic, inspired

From Latin prosaicus, from prosa, prose: plain, ordinary writing, as opposed to poetry.
