How the SAT changed in 2024
In March 2024 the SAT in the U.S. moved from paper to a shorter, adaptive test taken on a computer. Here is what changed, side by side, and what the evidence says about whether it got easier.
Which one will you take?
If you take the SAT now, you take the digital SAT. The paper SAT isn't given anymore. (Students who test on paper as an accommodation get a paper form of the digital test, not the old one.) Did it get easier?
Some people say yes. Here is who says what.
- What changed for sure
- The digital SAT is shorter, gives more time per math question (about 95 seconds instead of 83), allows a calculator on every math question, and swaps long reading passages for short ones. That changes how it feels: in the College Board's 2021 pilot, 80% of students found it less stressful. - Critics
- A writer who works for the Classic Learning Test, a competing test, argues that the shorter passages, the calculator and the extra time make the SAT less demanding. A 2024 working paper by two University of Cincinnati economists argued that SAT math questions grew easier from 2008 to 2023, before the digital test; its authors say their new method can't yet prove cause, and it hasn't been peer reviewed. - The College Board
- The test maker says the rigor is the same. It reports that 7% of students scored 1400 or higher both on the paper test in 2019 and on the digital test recently, and that digital scores still line up with grades and AP scores. Its July 2026 study found that passage length doesn't meaningfully change how students do; in its experiment, students did slightly better on the longer versions of the same passages. What we can say: the digital SAT is shorter and less rushed, and the calculator is allowed throughout. Scores are reported on the same 400–1600 scale, and the College Board says they are comparable with paper scores, though the two tests measure similar but not identical things. The claims that it is easier come mostly from critics, and no independent study we found settles the question.
What it means for practice here
- Digital SAT sets come in two modules of 22 questions and 35 minutes, easiest to hardest within each, with a calculator allowed throughout and about a quarter typed answers (negative answers allowed).
- Paper SAT sets start with the no-calculator portion (problems meant to be done by hand) and then the calculator portion, each at its own pace; typed answers fit the old four-character grid and are never negative.
- Every problem is our own, from Math Ladder's generators. Results show the topics to work on; nothing here predicts a score.
