Roman Numerals

Write numbers the Roman way, and read them back. Print a fresh sheet with its answer key, or try one on screen.

How to play

  1. I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000.
  2. Add the values from left to right, biggest first.
  3. When a smaller numeral comes just before a bigger one, take it away: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40.

What it exercises

Place value from a different angle. Roman numerals have no zero and no columns, so you see why our way of writing numbers is so handy.

Levels

  • Easy Up to 50.
  • Medium Up to 500.
  • Hard Up to 3999, plus adding two Roman numerals.
