Letter Arithmetic
An addition sum in letters. Which digit is each letter? Print a fresh sheet with its answer key, or try one on screen.
How to play
- Start in the left column. If the answer is longer than the numbers you add, its first letter must be 1.
- Work in from the right, keeping track of carries.
- Use the hints, and when you think you've got it, check the whole sum.
What it exercises
Column addition and carrying, run backwards. You reason about what each column allows instead of just adding.
Levels
- Easy Two-digit numbers, with hints.
- Medium Three-digit numbers.
- Hard Four digits, or three numbers to add, with at most one hint.
