Secret Ciphers

Crack number codes, shift ciphers and substitution ciphers. Print a fresh sheet with its answer key, or try one on screen.

How to play

  1. Number code: A = 1, B = 2 and so on, unless the puzzle says it starts somewhere else.
  2. Shift cipher: every letter slid the same number of places along the alphabet. The alphabet strip helps you count.
  3. Substitution cipher: each letter swapped for another. Use the hints, then look for short words like A, THE and IS.

What it exercises

Letter patterns and careful counting. Ciphers are a gentle way into how codes work and why some are easier to crack than others.

Levels

  • Easy Number codes and small shifts, with the shift given.
  • Medium Bigger shifts and number codes with a twist.
  • Hard Substitution ciphers with a few hints, and shifts you have to find.
