Number Bases
Binary, octal and hex conversion sheets, and binary adding. Print a fresh sheet with its answer key, or try one on screen.
How to play
- Each place is worth the base times the place to its right. In binary the places are 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and so on. In hex they are 1, 16, 256.
- To change to decimal, multiply each digit by its place value and add.
- To change from decimal, take out the biggest place value that fits, and repeat. Or divide by the base and keep the remainders.
What it exercises
Place value, the idea behind how we write every number, and how computers store everything as 0s and 1s.
Levels
- Easy Up to 15, and four-place tables.
- Medium Up to 255 (one byte), hex and octal, adding small binary numbers.
- Hard Up to 65,535, octal and binary, adding eight-bit numbers.
