Memory SystemsHow Memory Athletes Train

A Sensible Training Plan

Train the codes first, then speed: short daily sessions, a timer, a log of your scores, and spaced review of permanent lists.

If you want to try memory challenges, here is a plan that matches what works.

  • Weeks 1 to 2: learn your 00 to 99 list or card codes as flashcards, with spaced review.
  • Weeks 3 to 4: build and walk three or more journeys.
  • Then: short daily drills, 15 to 30 minutes, on one event. Accuracy first.
  • Log your time and errors. Fix the codes that cause errors.
  • Keep permanent lists on their own routes with the 1-3-7-21 schedule.
  • Sleep well, and keep it fun.

Key idea

Codes first, then routes, then speed. Short and daily beats long and rare.

Worked example: Worked example

Ty can memorize 20 cards in 3 minutes with 4 errors. What should he work on?
  1. Accuracy comes before speed.
  2. Find which codes caused the errors and drill them.

Answer: The codes behind his errors, before trying to go faster.

Try your skills on the challenges and games.

Practice
