Number-Rhyme Pegs

Each number from 1 to 10 has a peg word that rhymes with it: one-bun, two-shoe, three-tree, and so on.

The oldest and easiest pegs rhyme with their numbers. This is a common list; you may change a peg if another rhyme is easier for you to picture, but then keep it.

3tree

6sticks

8gate
9vine
10hen

Key idea

Say the number, hear the rhyme, see the picture. Then link the item to the picture.

Worked example: Worked example

Hang a short list on the rhyme pegs: 1 milk, 2 stamps, 3 batteries.
  1. 1 bun: a bun soaking in a puddle of milk.
  2. 2 shoe: a shoe covered in stamps.
  3. 3 tree: a tree with batteries hanging like fruit.

Answer: Bun-milk, shoe-stamps, tree-batteries.

Why it works

Rhyme makes the peg come back with no effort, which is what a peg must do.
