To learn a long number, combine two tools: the Major System to turn digits into pictures, and a journey to keep the pictures in order.

  • Split the number into pairs (a final single digit uses a one-digit word).
  • Turn each pair into its list word.
  • Put one or two pictures at each spot on your route.
  • To recall, walk the route and decode.

Worked example: Worked example

Learn 31415926 (the first eight digits of pi).
  1. Pairs: 31 · 41 · 59 · 26.
  2. Words: mat · rat · lip · notch.
  3. Route: front door (a mat), stairs (a rat), mirror (lips), sofa (a notch cut in it).

Answer: Four pictures on four spots.

Key idea

Pictures needed = digits ÷ 2, rounded up. Stops needed = pictures ÷ pictures per stop, rounded up.

Worked example: Counting stops

A 30-digit number with 2 pictures per stop. How many stops?
  1. 30 ÷ 2 = 15 pictures.
  2. 15 ÷ 2 = 7.5, round up.

Answer: 8 stops.
