The Link Method

Link each item to the next with a vivid picture, so each one leads to the one after it.

Not started Jump to practice

The link method needs no places. Picture item 1 and item 2 together, then item 2 and item 3, and so on, like a chain.

Worked example: Worked example

Link: dog, umbrella, piano, cake.
  1. Dog and umbrella: a dog walking on two legs under a tiny umbrella.
  2. Umbrella and piano: an umbrella opens out of a piano and plays a tune.
  3. Piano and cake: a piano made of cake, frosting on the keys.

Answer: Dog → umbrella → piano → cake.

Key idea

Each picture holds two items: the one you have and the next one.

Why it works

Links are quick to make, which is why they suit short lists. But if one link fails, everything after it is lost. A journey is safer for long lists.
