Keeping a Journey in Order

A journey's power is its order: each stop has a number, so you can recall forward, backward, or from any stop.

Not started Jump to practice

Because every stop has a fixed place in the order, a journey can answer "What is at stop 12?" or "What came before the rope?"

Worked example: Worked example

Walk: gate (rope), porch (lamp), door (drum), hall (kite), kitchen (bell), garden (boat). What came just before the bell?
  1. The bell is at the kitchen, stop 5.
  2. Stop 4 is the hall, which holds the kite.

Answer: The kite.

Key idea

Count stops in a fixed direction. Every fifth stop is a landmark that keeps the count honest.
