Your First Session

Four steps: choose one small thing, encode it with one tool, retrieve it with the book closed, and space it on the calendar.

Here is the infographic's first session, in four steps.

StepWhat to do
1 · ChooseOne poem, one list, one set of terms, not the whole chapter.
2 · EncodePick one tool: a palace, chunks, a sketch or a song.
3 · RetrieveClose the books and tell it back. Check. Fix only the misses.
4 · SpaceMark day 1, 3, 7 and 21 on the calendar, or file the card in the box.

Key idea

The recipe: one vivid encode + spaced retrieval. Always finish with a closed-book recall, and put the next review on the calendar before you close the books.

Worked example: Worked example

Nora wants to learn the eight parts of speech. Plan her first session.
  1. Choose: the eight parts of speech.
  2. Encode: an acrostic or a memory palace.
  3. Retrieve: close the book, list all eight, check.
  4. Space: mark days 1, 3, 7 and 21.

Answer: Choose, encode, retrieve, space.

Common mistake

Ending the session with a reread. End with a recall.
