The Preamble to the Constitution
One sentence of 52 words, split into 9 phrases to learn. The text and its spelling ("defence", "insure") and capitals follow the National Archives transcription of the signed Constitution of 1787; "defense" is accepted when typing.
The Preamble is the opening sentence of the Constitution. It says who is acting (we the people), why (six goals), and what they are doing (making a Constitution). It is short enough to learn in a week and is a classic first piece of memory work.
Narrate it first: say it aloud, then say in your own words what each goal means. Then chunk it. The six goals in the middle are the hard part, so give them a first-letter chain, U J T D W L (Union, Justice, Tranquility, defence, Welfare, Liberty), and a picture each: a knot tying states together, a balance scale, a sleeping cat, a shield, a full dinner table, a torch. Learn three phrases at a time, recite with the page covered, and check. Come back on day 1, 3, 7 and 21.
Encode make it vivid → Space bring it back on day 1, 3, 7, 21 → Retrieve pull it from your head. From the infographic Remember It on Purpose.
