The phases of the Moon, in order

8 items · Ages 6+ · In order

Eight phases in a cycle of about 29.5 days. Left and right are as seen from the Northern Hemisphere; from the Southern Hemisphere the picture is flipped. "Third quarter" and "last quarter" are the same phase.

The Moon does not change shape. Half of it is always lit by the Sun, and as it circles Earth we see more or less of that lit half. Learn the eight names and you can tell, just by looking, whether the Moon is growing or shrinking and when it will be full.

How to learn it

Start from the idea, not the words: a ball lit from one side, seen from different angles. Try it with a lamp and an orange. Then learn two word pairs: waxing means growing, waning means shrinking; crescent is less than half, gibbous is more than half. The eight names now build themselves in two chunks of four. In the Northern Hemisphere, D-O-C helps: a growing Moon is lit on the right like a D, full is an O, and a shrinking Moon is lit on the left like a C.

Encode make it vivid → Space bring it back on day 1, 3, 7, 21 → Retrieve pull it from your head. From the infographic Remember It on Purpose.
