The four eons of Earth's history
Four eons. Start dates are from the International Commission on Stratigraphy chart, version 2024/12, in millions of years ago (Ma). Older charts and textbooks give slightly different numbers, because the dates are refined as rocks are re-dated. The Hadean has no formal lower boundary; 4,567 Ma is about the age of the solar system. The first three eons together are often called the Precambrian, an informal name.
Earth is about 4.5 billion years old, and geologists split that long story into four huge chapters called eons. Knowing them gives you a frame for everything else: fossils, mountains, and how short human history is.
Four items fit in working memory at once, so learn them as one chunk. The names tell the story if you know their Greek roots: Hades (fiery start), archaios (ancient), proteros + zoe (earlier life), phaneros + zoe (visible life). Make it a four-panel comic: a fiery ball, a rock with a speck of life, green slime and bubbles of oxygen, then a busy sea of creatures.
Encode make it vivid → Space bring it back on day 1, 3, 7, 21 → Retrieve pull it from your head. From the infographic Remember It on Purpose.
The four eons of Earth's history
| Order | Eon | Began (million years ago) | Name means | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hadean | 4567 | From Hades, the Greek underworld: a hot, young Earth with no lasting rocks. | Earth forms; the Moon forms from a giant impact; few rocks survive from this time. |
| 2 | Archean | 4031 | From the Greek for "beginning" or "ancient." | The oldest rocks; the first simple, single-celled life. |
| 3 | Proterozoic | 2500 | Greek for "earlier life." | Oxygen builds up in the air; cells with a nucleus appear; the first many-celled life near the end. |
| 4 | Phanerozoic | 538.8 | Greek for "visible life." | Animals with shells and skeletons spread, then fish, land plants, dinosaurs, mammals and people. |
