The dwarf planets, in order from the Sun

5 items · Ages 8+ · In order

The five dwarf planets the International Astronomical Union recognizes. Astronomers think there are many more far out in the Kuiper Belt and beyond that have not been confirmed.

In 2006 astronomers created a new group, the dwarf planets, for round worlds that orbit the Sun but have not cleared their path of other objects. Pluto is the most famous; one sits in the asteroid belt and the rest are far beyond Neptune.

How to learn it

Five fits in one chunk. Make a first-letter sentence for the order (C, P, H, M, E), for example "Curious Penguins Hike Many Evenings," or better, one of your own. Then give each a picture from its fact: a cereal bowl for Ceres, a heart for Pluto, a spinning football for Haumea, and a goddess with a single moon for Eris.

Encode make it vivid → Space bring it back on day 1, 3, 7, 21 → Retrieve pull it from your head. From the infographic Remember It on Purpose.
