Steps
You’ll need: roasting pan or 9-by-13-inch pan, aluminum foil, small saucepan, pastry brush, instant-read thermometer.
- Heat the oven to 325°F. Set the ham cut side down in the pan and add the water. Cover tightly with foil so it does not dry out.
- Bake 12 to 14 minutes per pound, about 1 1/2 hours for a 7-pound ham, until an instant-read thermometer in the thickest part, not touching bone, reads 120°F.
- Meanwhile, simmer the glaze ingredients in a small saucepan 3 to 4 minutes, stirring, until slightly thick.
- Raise the oven to 400°F. Uncover the ham, brush it all over with half the glaze, letting some run between the slices, and bake 10 minutes. Brush with the rest and bake 5 to 10 minutes more, until glossy and the ham reaches 140°F.
- Let it rest 10 minutes, then cut along the bone to release the slices. Spoon the pan juices over.
🌡 Safe temperaturesFully cooked ham, reheated 140°F. Check the thickest part with a food thermometer (USDA). More on food safety.
Make aheadMix the glaze up to 1 week ahead and keep it in the fridge.
❄️ FreezerFreeze sliced leftover ham for 1 to 2 months for best quality. Thaw in the fridge.
↺ LeftoversUse leftover ham in Ham and Cheddar Quiche, Scalloped Potatoes and Ham, sandwiches or split pea soup. Save the bone for soup. Reheat leftovers to 165°F.
