Flaxseed

Have extra flaxseed? Here’s how to choose, store and prep flaxseed, plus 5 family recipes to use it all up, best matches first.

🛒 Choosing it

Ground flaxseed is easier to digest than whole seeds.

🧊 Storing it

Pantry
Whole seeds: a cool, dry place
Fridge
Ground flax: refrigerate or freeze; it goes stale faster

Keep the fridge at 40°F or below and the freezer at 0°F. Freezer times are for best quality; food kept frozen at 0°F stays safe. When in doubt, throw it out. Times from NDSU Extension.

🔪 Prepping it

Stir into oatmeal, smoothies and muffins. 1 tablespoon ground flax plus 3 tablespoons water stands in for 1 egg in many baked goods.
