Basil

Have extra basil? Here’s how to choose, store and prep basil, plus 8 family recipes to use it all up, best matches first.

🛒 Choosing it

Look for perky, bright leaves with no dark spots.

Best season: Summer. Timing varies by region.

🧊 Storing it

Counter
Stems in a glass of water, out of the sun, for a day or two; cold darkens the leaves

Keep the fridge at 40°F or below and the freezer at 0°F. Freezer times are for best quality; food kept frozen at 0°F stays safe. When in doubt, throw it out.

🔪 Prepping it

Tear or slice just before using. Blend extra into pesto and freeze it.

🌱 Grow it

You can grow your own: culinary herbs. The Food Garden Planner shows how much to plant for your family and when it comes in.
