Apples

Have extra apples? Here’s how to choose, store and prep apples, plus 7 family recipes to use it all up, best matches first.

🛒 Choosing it

Choose firm apples with no bruises. Crisp, tart apples (like Granny Smith) bake well; sweeter ones are great raw.

Best season: Late summer and fall; stored apples are sold all year. Timing varies by region.

🧊 Storing it

Fridge
About 1 month to 6 weeks in the crisper
Freezer
12 months, cooked or sliced

Keep the fridge at 40°F or below and the freezer at 0°F. Freezer times are for best quality; food kept frozen at 0°F stays safe. When in doubt, throw it out. Times from Rutgers Cooperative Extension and Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University System.

🔪 Prepping it

Wash and slice; dip in lemon water to keep slices from browning in lunchboxes.
