Not started Jump to practice

Shapes have sides and corners. A side is a straight edge. A corner is where two sides meet. Let’s count them!

Touch each gold dot. How many corners?

Key idea

A triangle has 3 sides and 3 corners. Squares and rectangles have 4 of each.

Worked example: A square’s corners

How many corners does a square have?
  1. Touch each corner: 1, 2, 3, 4.

Answer: 4 corners

For the grown-up: Run a finger along the edges of a book and count the sides. Tap each corner of a napkin. Make shapes with play dough and poke a finger in each corner. Keep screen time short: two or three problems, then play.
  • Try it at home: Count corners on a book.
  • Walk around a rug and count its sides.
  • Make shapes with sticks and count them.
