When we put two groups together, we count them all. 2 cats and 1 more cat make 3 cats!
Key idea
Putting together makes more. Count them all.
Worked example: Two plates
One plate has 2 crackers. The other has 2. How many in all?
- Put them together.
- Count: 1, 2, 3, 4.
Answer: 4 crackers
For the grown-up: Use small numbers, up to 5, and real things. “You have 2 blocks. I give you 1. How many now?” Let your child count them all. No need to write anything. A few problems on the screen is plenty. The real practice is with things you can touch.
- Try it at home: Join two small piles of blocks and count.
- Add a raisin to a plate of 3.
- Act out a story: 2 bears, 1 more comes.
