A pattern repeats again and again. Red, blue, red, blue … What comes next? Red! Say it out loud and you can hear it.
Key idea
In an AB pattern, two things take turns.
For the grown-up: Make patterns with your body: clap, stomp, clap, stomp. Use blocks or beads: red, blue, red, blue. Ask your child to keep it going, then to make one for you. A few problems on the screen is plenty. The real practice is with things you can touch.
- Try it at home: Clap, tap, clap, tap.
- Make a bead or noodle necklace that repeats.
- Find patterns on clothes or tiles.
