One more is the next counting number.

Not started Jump to practice

When one more comes, the number goes up by one. It’s the next counting number! 3 and one more is 4.

3 ducks and 1 more duck. How many now?

Key idea

One more is the next number when you count.

Worked example: One more block

Sam has 4 blocks and gets 1 more. How many?
  1. Start at 4.
  2. The next number is 5.

Answer: 5 blocks

For the grown-up: Build a tower and add one block at a time, saying the new number each time. Ask “What if we add one more?” before you add it, so your child can guess. Stop while it is still fun. Then go and play the real-life version.
  • Try it at home: Add one block at a time to a tower.
  • Drop one more coin in a jar and say the number.
  • Sing a song where one more joins in.
