Three of these go together and one does not. Can you find the one that doesn’t belong? Then tell why!
Key idea
Look for what three of them share, then find the one that is different.
Worked example: Fruit and a car
Apple, banana, car, pear. Which does not belong?
- The apple, banana and pear are fruit.
- The car is not a fruit.
Answer: The car
For the grown-up: Play “one of these is not like the others” with real things: three spoons and a sock. Ask your child to explain. A good reason is worth more than the answer. Short and happy beats long. Five minutes is a good lesson.
- Try it at home: Put out three toys and one snack.
- Find the odd one in a row of blocks.
- Make your own puzzle for a grown-up to solve.
