Measuring with Blocks

Measure a length with blocks and compare.

Not started Jump to practice

How long is it? We can measure with blocks! Lay blocks end to end, with no gaps, and count them.

Count the blocks under the pencil.

Key idea

Line up blocks with no gaps and count them to measure.

Worked example: A blocky snake

The snake is as long as 5 blocks. How long is it?
  1. Count the blocks under it: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Answer: 5 blocks long

For the grown-up: Measure things around the house with blocks, paper clips or your child’s feet. Show how to keep the blocks touching, with no gaps and no overlaps. Short and happy beats long. Five minutes is a good lesson.
  • Try it at home: Measure a table with steps heel to toe.
  • How many blocks long is a spoon?
  • Measure a teddy bear with paper clips.
