Pre-KBig, Tall, Long, Heavy

Heavy and Light

Tell which is heavier or lighter, and read a balance.

Not started Jump to practice

Some things are heavy and some are light. A pumpkin is heavy. A leaf is light. A balance helps: the heavy side goes down.

The pumpkin side went down. The pumpkin is heavier.

Key idea

On a balance, the heavier side goes down.
For the grown-up: Let your child hold two things, one in each hand, and say which is heavier. A hanger with two cups on strings makes a simple balance. Bigger is not always heavier: try a balloon and a rock. Stop while it is still fun. Then go and play the real-life version.
  • Try it at home: Hold a book and a feather: which is heavier?
  • Make a hanger balance with two cups.
  • Carry the light bag and the heavy bag.
