Some groups are so small you can see how many at once, without counting. Look! One. Two. Three. Your eyes just know.

How many dots? Can you tell without counting?

Key idea

You can see 1, 2 or 3 things at a glance.
For the grown-up: Hold up a hand with 1, 2 or 3 crackers and ask “How many?” right away. Quick looks build a feel for small numbers. Make it a game, not a test. Short and happy beats long. Five minutes is a good lesson.
  • Try it at home: Show 2 or 3 spoons for a second: how many?
  • Roll a die and say the number fast.
  • Spot pairs: 2 shoes, 2 eyes, 2 wheels.

Practice
