Pre-KCounting

Counting to 5

Say the numbers 1 to 5 in order.

Not started Jump to practice

Let’s count to 5! Say it with me: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. The numbers always come in the same order, like the steps of a little staircase.

Point to each square and say its number.

Key idea

The counting numbers always go in the same order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Worked example: Climbing steps

Mia climbs 5 steps. What does she say?
  1. Step one: 1.
  2. Then 2, 3, 4.
  3. The top step: 5.

Answer: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

For the grown-up: Count out loud together all day: stairs, socks going into the drawer, bites of a snack. Clap or stomp on each number so the words have a beat. A few problems on the screen is plenty. The real practice is with things you can touch.
  • Try it at home: Count steps as you climb them.
  • Sing a counting song or rhyme with fingers.
  • Count 5 jumps, then 5 claps.
