Now let’s count all the way to 10! After 5 come 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. You can also start from any number, like 4: 4, 5, 6.

Say each number as you point. Then try starting at 3.

Key idea

After 5 come 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.

Worked example: Start at 4

Leo starts counting at 4. What comes next?
  1. Leo says 4.
  2. The next numbers are 5, 6, 7.

Answer: 5, 6, 7

For the grown-up: Count to 10 while you wash hands, wait for the bath to fill, or swing on a swing. Sometimes start from a number other than 1: “Let’s count from 6!” Short and happy beats long. Five minutes is a good lesson.
  • Try it at home: Count 10 pushes on the swing.
  • Count down the last 5 steps before the bottom.
  • Use your 10 fingers to count.

Practice
