Circles and Squares

Know a circle and a square, even when turned.

Not started Jump to practice

A circle is round, with no corners. A square has 4 straight sides that are all the same, and 4 corners. Turn a square and it’s still a square!

One circle and two squares. The turned one is still a square.

Key idea

A circle is round. A square has 4 sides the same length.
For the grown-up: Trace around cups for circles and around a cracker for squares. Go on a shape hunt: plates, clocks, windows, tiles. Turn a square cracker and ask if it is still a square. Short and happy beats long. Five minutes is a good lesson.
  • Try it at home: Hunt for circles in the kitchen.
  • Make a square with 4 craft sticks.
  • Draw circles in the air with your arm.
