The Last Number Tells How Many

The last number you say is how many there are.

When you touch and count, the last number you say is special.

Mia counted the bears: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. The last number, 6, tells how many.

Key idea

The last number you say tells how many there are in all.

Why it works

Each number you say tells how many you have counted so far. When you say 6, you have counted 6 bears. So the last number is the whole group.

Worked example: How many blocks?

Ana counts her blocks: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. How many blocks does she have?
  1. The last number Ana says is 5.
  2. The last number tells how many.

Answer: 5 blocks

Tap them all. What number do you end on? That is how many.

Common mistake

When asked “How many?”, counting all over again from 1. You already know the answer! Just say the last number again.
For grown-ups: After your child counts, ask “So how many are there?” Look for the last number, said without counting again. Counting in a different order gives the same answer, too.

Practice

Pass with 3 right answers, the last 2 in a row. Each right answer earns 1 XP.
