Long, Tall and Heavy

Describe things by length, height or weight.

Not started Jump to practice

Things can be measured. We can ask: How long is it? How tall is it? How heavy is it?

The tree is tall. The flower is short.
The watermelon is heavy, so its side goes down. The feather is light.
  • Long or short: how far it goes from end to end.
  • Tall or short: how high it stands.
  • Heavy or light: how hard it is to lift.

Key idea

Length, height and weight are things we can measure. Color and name are not.

Why it works

Measuring tells “how much.” A thing can have more or less length or weight, but it cannot have more or less “red.”

Worked example: A backpack

What can you measure about a backpack?
  1. Lift it: how heavy is it?
  2. Look from bottom to top: how tall is it?
  3. Both of these can be measured.

Answer: How heavy it is and how tall it is

For grown-ups: Use the words long, short, tall, heavy and light in everyday talk: “This bag is heavy. This ribbon is long.”
