KCounting to 20K.CC.A.2

Counting On from Any Number

Start counting from a number other than 1.

Not started Jump to practice

You don’t always have to start at 1. You can count from any number.

Start on 6. Hop 3 more: 7, 8, 9.

Key idea

Start at the number you are given and keep going: 6, 7, 8, 9 …

Why it works

The count from 1 to 6 is already done. Starting at 6 skips the part you already know, so it is quicker, and the numbers after 6 are the same as always.

Worked example: Counting on from 13

Count on from 13 up to 17.
  1. Start at 13.
  2. Keep going: 14, 15, 16, 17.

Answer: 13, 14, 15, 16, 17

Common mistake

Going back to 1 every time. Instead, put the start number “in your head”: tap your head, say it, then count on.
For grown-ups: Play “start at” games: “Start at 8 and count to 15.” Take turns being the one who picks the start.
