Grade 1The Equal Sign and Word Problems1.OA.D.7

True or False?

Decide whether both sides of an equation are equal.

Not started Jump to practice

Since = means the same amount, you can check whether a number sentence is true.

$4 + 1$ is 5, and 6 is more. The balance is not level, so $4 + 1 = 6$ is false.

Key idea

Work out each side. If both sides are the same amount, it is true. If not, it is false.

Why it works

= is a promise that both sides match. Working out each side tests the promise.

Worked example: True?

True or false: $8 = 5 + 3$
  1. Left side: 8.
  2. Right side: $5 + 3 = 8$.
  3. Same amount: true.

Answer: True

Worked example: True?

True or false: $6 + 1 = 4 + 2$
  1. Left side: 7.
  2. Right side: 6.
  3. Not the same amount: false.

Answer: False

For grown-ups: Take turns writing a true or false sentence for each other to check.

Practice

Pass with 3 right answers, the last 2 in a row. Each right answer earns 1 XP.
