You can sort and count answers, then show them in a picture graph. Use your how many more thinking to compare the groups.
Key idea
Each picture stands for one answer. Count a row to find how many. Compare rows to find how many more or fewer.
Why it works
The pictures line up in rows, so the longer row has more. The extra pictures in the longer row show how many more.
Worked example: Reading the graph
Use the graph. How many more children chose orange than grapes? How many children answered in all?
- Orange: 7. Grapes: 3. $7 - 3 = 4$ more.
- In all: $5 + 3 + 7 = 15$.
Answer: 4 more; 15 in all
For grown-ups: Make a quick picture graph at home: “Which fruit do we like best?” Let each person add one picture.
