Putting Shapes Together

Combine shapes to make new shapes.

Not started Jump to practice

Since you know what makes a shape a shape, you can build new shapes from old ones.

2 half-circles make a circle. 3 triangles make a trapezoid. 2 trapezoids make a hexagon.

Key idea

Shapes can be put together to make new shapes, and new shapes can be put together again.

Why it works

When pieces fit with no gaps and no overlaps, the outside edge is a new shape. You can trace it to name it.

Worked example: Two squares

What shape do 2 squares side by side make?
  1. The outside edge has 4 straight sides and 4 square corners.
  2. It is longer than it is tall.
  3. It is a rectangle.

Answer: A rectangle

For grown-ups: Pattern blocks, paper cut-outs or toast cut into triangles all work for building new shapes.

Practice

Pass with 3 right answers, the last 2 in a row. Each right answer earns 1 XP.
