ἵστημι
HEES-tay-mihἵστημι, στήσω, ἔστησα/ἔστην, ἕστηκα, —, ἐστάθην — set, place; (intrans.) stand
- μι-verb with reduplicated present (ἱ- < σι-). Two aorists: 1st ἔστησα “I set” (transitive), 2nd ἔστην “I stood” (intransitive).
- Perfect ἕστηκα “I stand” and pluperfect εἱστήκειν “I was standing” have present/imperfect meaning; short forms ἑστάναι, ἑστώς.
- NT also ἱστάνομεν (Rom 3:31, from ἱστάνω) and imperfect ἔστηκεν (John 8:44, from στήκω).
Forms in bold occur in the New Testament; the others complete the pattern. A dash (—) marks a form that does not exist.
