You'll need

  • Wide-ruled lined paper (several sheets)
  • A sharp pencil or a smooth gel pen
  • The book open at today's page
  • A watch, clock or phone timer that shows seconds (only for the optional speed check)

What's in the book

Lesson 57 is drill 69, the word "Gunning" repeated along the line.

The lesson, step by step

  1. Warm up

About three minutes: compact ovals, then a line each of small o, small m and small l (drills 3, 11, 14 and 33).

Then a line of capital G.

  2. What the book says

Nothing can be better at this stage of the work than easy words constantly repeated.

  3. Look at the model

Open the book page. Look at drill 69: "Gunning" four times on each line.

  4. Lines of Gunning

    Five lines.

Optional speed target: twelve or fourteen words a minute.

  5. Gentle check

Repetition shows up faults. Ask your child to find one thing that goes wrong more than once and fix it in the last line.

  6. Finish

    Write "running" once.
