What's in the book

Lesson 50 is drill 55, a slant drill, and drill 56, the word "James".

The lesson, step by step

  1. Warm up

About three minutes: compact ovals, then a line each of small o, small m and small l (drills 3, 11, 14 and 33).

  2. Drill 55: slant

If slant is troublesome, study and practice this drill faithfully.

Two lines, pulling every down stroke toward the middle of the body.

  3. Look at the model

Open the book page. Look at drill 56: "James" six times on a line.

From the beginning stroke of J to the finishing of small s the pen should not be lifted.

  4. Lines of James

Four lines with a steady, light, even movement.

Optional speed target: eighteen or twenty words a minute.

  5. Gentle check

Did the pen stay down through each whole word?

  6. Finish

Write a name that starts with J: "Jane", "Jim" or a friend's.
