35. Drill 37: Lulling
Goal: Your child writes "Lulling" with all the l's the same height and shorter than the capital.
You'll need
- Wide-ruled lined paper (several sheets)
- A sharp pencil or a smooth gel pen
- The book open at today's page
- A watch, clock or phone timer that shows seconds (only for the optional speed check)
What's in the book
Lesson 35 is drill 37, the word "Lulling", with check questions about the l's.
The lesson, step by step
Warm up
About three minutes: compact ovals, then a line each of small o, small m and small l (drills 3, 11, 14 and 33).
Look at the model
Open the book page. Look at drill 37: "Lulling" four times on a line.
Write two lines, then compare
Two lines, then stop and ask the book's questions:
Are your small l's shorter than the capitals; are both l's the same height; and do they cross one space above the base?
Two more lines
Write two more lines, trying to fix one thing. The book asks for improvement in each line.
Optional speed target: ten to twelve words a minute.
Gentle check
Which line is best: the first or the last?
Finish
Write "lull" and "fill".
