You'll need

  • Wide-ruled lined paper (several sheets)
  • A sharp pencil or a smooth gel pen
  • The book open at today's page
  • A watch, clock or phone timer that shows seconds (only for the optional speed check)

What's in the book

Lesson 23 is drill 23, the word "Omen" written six times on each line.

The lesson, step by step

  1. Warm up

Three to five minutes: compact ovals (drill 3), a line of small o (drill 11) and a line of small m (drill 14). This is the book's daily opening from now on.

Add a line of capital O (drill 8).

  2. Look at the model

Open the book page. Look at drill 23: "Omen" written six times on a line, the O joined to the m.

  3. Start the O right

Trace the letter with the pen in the air. Let the pen strike the paper when moving rapidly downward.

  4. Write the word

    Four lines of "Omen."

Optional speed target: about sixteen a minute, once the movement is free.

  5. Gentle check

Check each O: is the last stroke pushed upward and joined smoothly to the m?

  6. Finish

Write "Omen" once more as neatly as possible, then a word of the child's choice that starts with O.
