The Palmer Method of Business Writing · Lesson 139 · Part 14: Sentences and line-writing
134. Drill 163: a note with figures
Goal: Your child writes a line in the form of a business note, with names, capitals and figures.
You'll need
- Wide-ruled lined paper (several sheets)
- A sharp pencil or a smooth gel pen
- The book open at today's page
What's in the book
Lesson 139 is drill 163, a line in the form of a business note: "Pay James C Robinson on demand" followed by an amount in dollars and cents.
The lesson, step by step
Warm up
Two or three minutes of your usual movement drills: compact ovals, then a line each of small o, m and l.
Then a line of mixed figures, small and separate (Lesson 69).
Look at the model
Open the book page. Look at drill 163. It is the kind of line written on a note or check: who is to be paid, and how much.
The parts
A line each of the capitals P, J, C and R, then a line of the amount in figures as the book shows it.
The whole line
Write the complete line several times. Keep the figures small and clear; in money, every figure must be read without guessing.
Gentle check
Read the amount aloud from your child's writing. Could anyone misread a figure?
Finish
Your child writes a pretend "Pay ... on demand" line to a family member for a small sum.
