The Palmer Method of Business Writing · Lesson 13 · Part 4: First small letters
13. Review and the alphabet page
Goal: Your child reviews the drills so far and finds on the alphabet page the letters already learned.
You'll need
- Wide-ruled lined paper (several sheets)
- A sharp pencil or a smooth gel pen
- The book open at today's page
What's in the book
Lesson 13 is a general review lesson. The next page shows the whole set of capitals, small letters and figures for reference, with the advice to spend one lesson a week on capitals.
The lesson, step by step
Warm up
About three minutes: compact ovals (drill 3), a line of capital A (drill 6) and a line of small o (drill 11). The book asks for this opening at every lesson from here on.
What the book says
Make this a general review lesson.
Go back over drills 3, 6, 9 and 11, a line or two of each.
The alphabet page
Turn to the next page, with all the capitals, small letters and figures. Ask your child to find A, O, C and small o. Which letters look easy? Which look hard? Every one will be taught in the lessons ahead.
Capitals once a week
One lesson each week should be devoted to special study and practice of the capitals until they are mastered.
Agree on a "capitals day" for your week.
Gentle check
Bring out the first specimen from Lesson 1. Compare the capital A and O from then with today's. Talk about what has changed.
Finish
Write the child's first name, trying the new way for any letters already learned.
