The Palmer Method of Business Writing · Lesson 116 · Part 14: Sentences and line-writing
111. Line-writing and drill 139: A
Goal: Your child writes a whole line of writing evenly and starts the alphabet of sentences with A.
You'll need
- Wide-ruled lined paper (several sheets)
- A sharp pencil or a smooth gel pen
- The book open at today's page
What's in the book
A note before Lesson 116 says the following lessons give "copies in line-writing" from which pages should be written. Drill 139 is the sentence "Always study drill before practicing."
The lesson, step by step
Warm up
Two or three minutes of your usual movement drills: compact ovals, then a line each of small o, m and l.
Line-writing
From here, each lesson is a sentence, and the aim is a whole page that looks even, not just one good line.
The object of your practice should be attractive work and commercial speed.
Look at the model
Open the book page. Look at drill 139: "Always study drill before practicing." Most of the sentences that follow begin with the next capital of the alphabet.
Word by word
Practice this copy as given. Write each word over and over, until the motion used is almost automatic and a marked improvement is shown in the general appearance.
The whole line
Then write a few lines of the complete sentence and look at how they sit on the page.
Gentle check and finish
Does the writing fit neatly between the lines? Finish by writing the sentence once more in your best hand.
