What's in the book

No. 131 has a heading explaining that in some of its words the last syllable has a special pronunciation, and in others the vowel i may be sounded differently. Only part of the heading could be read in the scan text we used; follow the page. (This page could not be fetched on its own when these guides were made, so only the heading and the rule are given here. Follow the page itself for the words.)

The lesson, step by step

  1. Review

Say "vision" and "measure" and feel the buzz of zh.

  2. The pattern

Read the heading over No. 131 yourself first. It tells how to say the last syllable of the words in this table. Explain it to your child in plain words before reading.

  3. Read the table aloud

Read the table aloud a column at a time. You read a word, your child repeats it, pointing. Then your child reads a column alone.

  4. Spell aloud by syllables

Your child spells each word a syllable at a time, saying each syllable, then the whole word. Do one column looking, then cover it and spell a few from memory.

  5. Dictation

Choose six words from the table. Say each, use it in a short sentence, and say it again. Your child writes it. Check together against the book.

  6. Wrap up

Your child chooses the three hardest words and reads them to you again.
