What's in the book

The top of the page finishes No. 94 (ravenous, vigorous, ominous, numerous, humorous, hazardous). No. 95 is headed "Words of two syllables, accented on the second." The words of No. 95 were not clear in the scan text we used; follow the page itself.

The lesson, step by step

  1. Review

Read the end of No. 94 at the top of this page: ravenous, vigorous, numerous. Spell two by syllables.

  2. The pattern

Read the heading over No. 95. Two beats, the second strong, like No. 86 (com-PEL, for-GET). Say three of the words and clap them.

  3. Read the table aloud

Read the table a column at a time. You read a word, your child repeats it, pointing. Then your child reads a column alone.

  4. Spell aloud by syllables

Your child spells each word a syllable at a time and says it. Then cover the column and spell a few from memory.

  5. Dictation

Choose six words from the table. Say each, use it in a sentence, say it again. Your child writes it. Check against the book.

  6. Wrap up

Your child picks two words from No. 94 and two from No. 95 and tells you where the accent falls in each.
